BPN NSW – Onesteel Site Visit Report

Thanks for having us along – it was a great experience and good to see another manufacturing site in action. I worked in the slabcaster at Port Kembla for 6 months back in 1990 and the rolling mill brought back some memories.

The biggest takeaway for me was the fact that we really do not have an Asset maintenance strategy. We have a maintenance procedures and systems but we have never taken the time to analyze and determined the expected useful life of much of our larger plant services equipment. We generally run until the cost to maintain becomes too great. It was also interesting to hear all the different issues people are facing and that we are not alone in many of the issues we face. It was reassuring that a lot of our maintenance strategies and plans are similar to what Sue described as best practice, we nowhere near Energy Australia’s level but we have started and are progressing on quite a few of her A-Z. I think every site has different challenges and you have to tailor your maintenance strategy around that, but the basic principles are all the same. I thought Sue’s presentation was great and covered a lot of areas
