NATIONAL NEWSLETTER

Welcome to our June 2016 edition of the BPN National Newsletter.

I have recently joined the BPN team as the BPN Coordinator and will be compiling and editing our regular BPN newsletter. The newsletter is designed for our members; to keep you informed on event reports and anything else of interest. Member contributions and suggestions are most welcome.

Since joining the team, I have purchased my safety boots, glasses and vest and have already been out to 3 site visits to meet members. I really look forward to meeting many more of you in the gemba!

Empowering and Engaging Your People at Laminex – QLD 20/04/16

“We were lucky enough to visit the Gympie Laminex plant where members from the Laminex group shared with us some of their achievements and the challenges they have encountered along the way. The high level of empowerment and engagement was evident as soon as we began our plant tour. It was an inspiring visit, I left with some great new ideas I look forward to working on in the future.”

Ryan Shaw, Engineering Manager – CSR PGH Bricks and Pavers

How Does Your Leadership Impact Your Lean Journey – VIC 22/04/16

“Networks like BPN are an invaluable opportunity for me to speak with like-minded professionals to share experiences, challenges and successes stories. The recent session at Fonterra was a great example of this and when its being led by a seasoned professional like Dirk Crouse it’s hard to not feel rejuvenated and enthusiastic ready to look at the next step in the C.I. journey back at your own business.”

Ben Cooksey, Continuous Improvement Manager, Sigma Pharmaceuticals

Managing Your Ageing Workforce at PPG – VIC 05/05/16

“The information sharing and open discussions throughout the event between all participants about our own individual workplaces and experiences was invaluable. So glad I took the time out of my day to attend this event.”

Lean Audit at Ductmakers – VIC 18/05/16

“Thanks to Daryl, Fedja & Danny for hosting 20 participants to conduct the Lean Audit of Duct makers. All the great work done over the past 3 years by Daryl & his team is evident from the high scores achieved. Few of the key take outs from the day are:

ü  Leaders Standard work combined with visual standards

ü  Idea management system and how well the shop floor is engaged

ü  Plant Layout- Focus on Production/Information flow

ü  Culture- How engaged and empowered the employees are

It was great to see how the leaders of this business lead by example instead of providing lip service on “Living the values”. Thanks once again to Daryl & Team.

Dinesh Rajendran, State Lean Manager- Victoria, Asahi Beverages

HSV Design Engineering & V8 Drive Experience – VIC 13/05/16

“At Sandown the excitement levels peaked once we saw the track and could smell the combination of high octane fuel and burnt rubber… Victor Caune from BPN instigated a Top Gear style shoot out, where lap times were recorded and a  prize to be awarded for the fastest lap.”

Quality and Safety at Astra Zeneca – NSW 05/05/16
“We found the site tour at Astra Zeneca very useful. We thought the idea of Stop cards for hazard reporting/elimination and Go cards for Improvements/new ideas, very practical. The Race to success program provided some healthy competition, encourages employees to take initiative and builds a very strong teamwork – these are all things that can be applied in our workplace.”

Bernie, QA Officer, Ontex Australia

Social Event ‘Cheese & Wine Tour Yarra Valley’ – VIC 22/05/16

The BPN ‘Bike Trip – Warburton’ VIC 17/04/16

“When I was invited to this bike ride, I was a little nervous. Will it be safe to ride a bike, or even sit on the back? How about these bike riders, will they look like motorcycle gang in Mad Max? However, I trusted Michael Walsh, the CEO of Branach manufacturing who invited me, so I decided to take an adventure.”

Managing Significant Business Challenges at Capral QLD 25/05/16

“While Capral is a much larger company then ours, it was great to see that we all still hit the same road blocks. It was encouraging to see Sean, the Regional General Manager take such a interest in this initiave. I hope we were able to help in some way. I know that I came away with some new ideas and some new contacts. Well worth the trip.

As a new member of the BPN, I was unsure of the exact benefits of participating in one of the site visits. I can see how these visits are of benefit to the hosting business. With such a wide variety of industries at the get together, the different approaches to issues and experience each brought is invaluable. Can’t wait to be involved in more.”

Megan Boulter – Office Manager, SCHÜTZ Australia Pty Ltd

“The visit to the Capral Extrusion  plant was interesting. Sean’s pre brief was honest about the current situation and challenges ahead. The factory tour was informative and the staff we met were friendly and engaged. Meeting other BPN members was also good as the diversity across industries was apparent but everyone had a common goal of improvement. I am looking forward to learning more with future visits.”

Guy Holcroft – Livestock Manager, Darwalla Group
